Design

One of the most overlooked things in promoting a business is design, look and style. Far from being an afterthought, it should be carefully considered and given a higher priority than it normally is, after all, you may only have one chance to win over a new customer.

Window Dressing

Your printed materials are the shopfront for your business and should give people an idea about HOW you do business as well as what you are selling.

At BWW, we can help you find the right look and feel for your company, whether that's for stationery, promotional literature or larger print items like banners. Using your ideas as a starting point we can work with you to create something that will firstly increase customer enquiries and secondly build up your brand and 'recognisability'.

So whether you have ideas of your own that need developing or would like us to create something from scratch, we're the right choice.

Design for All your Needs

We can create artwork for your company that can be used across most kinds of media. Our professional designers have created maps, illustrations, logos, advertising for national and local newspapers, bottle labels, beermats to name just a few.

The beauty of coming to us for your print and design needs is that everything matches, is styled the same and given equal care and attention to detail.

If you have something in mind that requires creativity, accuracy and flair, you can't get better than BWW.

Submitting Artwork

If you are going to be sending us your own artwork for printing, we would prefer that you send it to us as a PDF file.

Sending artwork in other formats can create problems that may take time and money to sort out. Please read our rough guide below for more details.

If you have any questions about creating artwork for us then our designer is only too happy to discuss the best option available to you.

PDF

This is an industry-standard format that ensures that all information, layout, fonts and colours are reproduced exactly as you intend them. Most leading publishing and office software has a PDF creation tool included. If you do not have the ability to create a PDF, there are low-cost and even free tools available.

InDesign

Adobe InDesign is the software we use at BWW and as such is a good option for creating your artwork. It has an in-built option to 'package' all the necessary files required to send it to us so takes a lot of the hassle out of the process. Additionally, it makes the creative process much easier than other less well-suited programs. As there is the option to export your file as a PDF this would be the better option than packaging your file.

Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is primarily an illustration program but later versions have added the option to create multi-page layouts. However, you would have to include fonts and images with your file if you chose this option. PDF creation is standard.

Photoshop

Although Adobe Photoshop is a program that may be more familiar to people, we recommend not using it to create any artwork that includes text. Apart from making text uneditable it also reproduces it poorly and in some cases it is illegible.

Pages

If you have an Apple system then you may well be familiar with Pages. There is the ability to export to PDF, which is much more preferable but if you must send it as a Pages file then ensure you send it along with fonts, any image files and a hard copy.

Word

Microsoft Word can cause many problems when opened on our systems. In many cases fonts will not display correctly or may be missing, colours may not reproduce as they appear on your screen and the layout may shift around depending on the version of Word you are using.

If you must send artwork in Word format then please send us the Word document itself, all the individual images used and all the fonts used in your document. In addition, please include a good quality, printed copy of the file so that we can see how you intend it to look.

glossary

Glossary

Below is a list of some of the most common terms used in the print and design industry. Click on a term to see its definition.

Design

CMYK

Full colour printing uses these four basic colours to create any colour required much like mixing paints! All colours are referenced as four values which specify the percentage of Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y) and Black (K) to be used to create it.

Live Matter

The images and text on a page that are essential content and must be within the page margins to ensure inclusion on the page once trimmed down to size. In contrast, some images, backgrounds and text may be used purely for design/visual purposes and may bleed off the page to be cut into when the final job is trimmed to size.

Resolution

This refers to the amount of individual elements of information packed into a given space. It is usually expressed as 'dpi' (dots per inch), which refers to the actual number of dots in one linear inch. Litho and digital printing uses a resolution of 300dpi while monitors and screens use a resolution of 72dpi (in most cases). This difference is why images may look great on a screen but print out fuzzy on paper.

RGB

All colours that appear on monitors, displays, phone screens, tablets etc use Red (R), Green (G) and Blue (B) light to recreate any given colour.

Pages, Guides and Marks

Bleed

The extra part of the artwork that extends outside the required paper size that will be cut off when the sheet is trimmed to the finished size of the job. If you want any image, colour or text to continue right to the paper's edge then this will need to be included on any submitted artwork.

Trim

The imaginary line that defines the edge of the printed page and indicates where the paper will be cut to size.

Margin

A guide line, offset from the edge of the page by a specified amount, inside which all important 'live' matter including essential parts of images and all informative text needs to be included.

Printing and Finishing

Digital Printing

The process where Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black toner is fused onto paper with a heated mechanism. Essentially the same process as a laser printer but with additional capacity for large format, coated papers and specialised colour processing.

Lithographic (Litho)

A printing process where a press transfers ink onto paper via a plate carrying the final etched image. In full colour printing, there are four plates, each carrying the corresponding colour information for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. When combined, these four colours give the illusion of a full spectrum of colours. In spot colour printing, pre-selected colours and specialist inks are mixed to a preset formula before being transferred to the paper.

Perfect Binding

The binding method for print jobs with a large number of pages. These pages are glued into a spine inside a cover.

Saddle Stitched

The binding method for print jobs using one or more staples on the spine.
